Ryan McClanahan - Percussion
While McClanahan started on piano at 3 years old playing both classical and ragtime styles, he had been banging on pots and pans in the kitchen even earlier. Ryan first started playing drums and percussion in sixth grade when he joined the middle school concert band. He immediately chose drums because they were the coolest instrument. Shortly after, McClanahan got a drum set from his parents and many jams and bands ensued.
In high school he bought the bongos he still uses today in Waker. Congas were one of the next instruments on the list, and even today "The Beat Lab" continues to grow on stage. After many cajon and percussion gigs in college and around Nashville, Ryan was asked to play with Waker (then known as Koa) in May 2014 for the "False Calls" release show. He joined the band for their "Maymester" Summer Tour and became an official member halfway through the tour after the guys couldn't hear the band without percussion filling out the sound.
Years later McClanahan is no longer the new guy and still an integral part of the band. Ryan's influences range anywhere from Tito Puente to Snarky Puppy and Umphrey's McGee.
After a show, feel free to talk to him about the Pittsburgh Steelers, food, and tennis among other interests.
